    Description

    Makiwara
The makiwara is a wooden striking-post used in Okinawan and Japanese martial arts to train striking techniques.
The makiwara is not a wooden heavy bag.
I cannot emphasize that enough. The makiwara is like a good honing stone. It requires time and repetition. And most importantly it requires skill in operating it. But if you take the time to develop that skill then the results you can achieve are nothing short of astounding.
The only real problem with the makiwara is where and how to mount them. The first makiwara were half buried in practitioners’ yards. Unfortunately, that is problematic if you don’t live on a subtropical island like Okinawa. This makiwara comes with a 18” (46cm)base pre-drilled to be attached to any wall with standard 16” (41cm) studs. It can also be attached to a concrete wall. An added bonus of this method is that it can be attached at any height so your makiwara can be exactly where you need it. The board is 48” (1.2m) tall so it can be used as a naha-makiwara for training in low stances like shieko-dachi, or it can be mounted higher for shuri-makiwara training in taller stances.
The striking post is made of 3.5" (9cm) red oak
and tapers from 3” (7.6cm) at the base to 1/2” (12.7mm) at the top. The leather pad is 8” (20cm) long, laces up at the back, and includes a rubber insert that offers cushioning but will not break down over time. The base is made of pine. It measures 18” (46cm) long and 8” (20cm) tall. It has three pre-drilled holes on each side that can be used with whatever hardware is needed to attach it to your surface.
    In the box:
48” (1.2m) red oak striking post
    leather pad (color may vary)
    wall-base
Not all walls have 16” (41cm) studs. Please locate your studs before ordering. If they are not standard we are happy to make a base to order for your wall, ordinarily there is no extra charge although it will effect handling times.
    One last DISCLAIMER:
Do not use a makiwara without the experience or supervision to keep you safe. If you do injure yourself stop using the makiwara until you are fully healed. If you are under 18 years old do not strike the makiwara with full power.
Please contact me if you have any questions.
